WBA Members-Only Event

Sponsored by: WBA Community Projects Subcommittee

First Shift is a D.C. based legal services organization that empowers workers in low-wage jobs to first know their rights and then exercise their rights related to caregiving and parenting. During this lunchtime session, you will learn about the critical work First Shift does to support pregnant workers and caregivers that regularly face workplace discrimination. You will also discover how legal professionals can help protect the rights of these vulnerable individuals.

First Shift provides legal education, coaching, and representation to pregnant workers and working caregivers on the issues of pregnancy and family responsibilities discrimination; pregnancy and breastfeeding accommodations; family and medical leave and the difference; and D.C. paid leave benefits, while also advocating for stronger legal protections.

The discussion will also cover First Shift’s holistic approach, including legal education, coaching, and representation, and will highlight concrete ways legal professionals can help safeguard the dignity and economic security of working families across the DMV.

This is an excellent opportunity for WBA members to learn about a local organization making a real difference in the lives of working families in the DMV area. This session will provide valuable insights and practical knowledge in the intersection of family caregiving and workplace rights
