Summary

The Chair's Attorney Honors Program is the SEC's highly sought-after entry-level federal attorney hiring program. The program recruits top talent across the country with a broad cross section of experiences. The program accepts law school graduates currently employed as judicial law clerks, full-time legal fellows, Presidential Management Fellows (PMF), or PMF finalists eligible for selection to work as entry-level attorneys. If selected, you will be assigned to a single Division or Office.

Typical duties may include:
Actual duties will depend on placement within the Commission

  • Investigating possible violations of the federal securities laws

  • Conducting related legal research and writing

  • Providing guidance to companies on SEC rules and forms

  • Providing input for the proposal of new and revised rules to the Commission

  • Working with a rulemaking team or rule filings submitted by self-regulatory organizations

  • Working on matters related to the equity, options, security-based swaps, and fixed income markets

  • You must possess a J.D. or LL.B. Degree.

  • You must be an active member of the bar in good standing

  • You must be currently employed in an ELIGIBLE ACTIVITY: judicial law clerk, full-time legal fellow, Presidential Management Fellow (PMF), or PMF finalist eligible for selection.

  • TRIAL PERIOD: This appointment may require completion of a two-year trial period.

  • DRUG TESTING: This position may be subjected to drug testing requirements.

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met before the selectee's entrance on duty (EOD) date.

As an applicant you do not need to have been admitted to a state bar association. However, before you can start work with the SEC as an attorney, you must be an active bar member in good standing. The anticipated entrance on duty (EOD) date is September/October 2022, or sooner.

BASIC REQUIREMENT: All applicants must possess the following before the start of employment with the SEC:

  • J.D. or LL.B. degree --AND--

  • An active member of the bar in good standing in any state, the territory of the United States, the District of Columbia, or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. (Note: proof of bar membership will be required before entry on duty.)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT: In addition to meeting the basic requirement, applicants must also meet the minimum qualification requirement.

SK-11: Applicants must meet one of the following:

  • Be currently employed as a judicial law clerk; or

  • Be currently employed as a full-time legal fellow; or

  • Be currently employed as a Presidential Management Fellow (PMF); or

  • Be a Presidential Management Fellow (PMF) finalist eligible for hire.

SK-12: Applicants must possess at least one year of post J.D. experience as a practicing attorney by the anticipated entrance on duty (EOD) date, September/October 2022, AND meet one of the following:

  • Be currently employed as a judicial law clerk; or

  • Be currently employed as a full-time legal fellow; or

  • Be currently employed as a Presidential Management Fellow (PMF); or

  • Be a Presidential Management Fellow (PMF) finalist eligible for hire.
