Why it matters
Right now, we are seeing an attempted authoritarian takeover in real time. But for months, the District’s authority to govern and spend its own locally raised dollars has been under attack. The consequences are immediate, and the stakes are high. What happens here is a test case for local jurisdictions nationwide, especially impacting Black and brown communities.
This moment calls for clarity, urgency, and action. As leaders in D.C.’s legal community, you understand that the attacks on D.C.’s autonomy are attacks on the rule of law and democracy for the whole nation.
