Presented by: DC Appleseed Center for Law and Justice

Because DC is a federal district (not a state) the city is uniquely and directly impacted by changes in federal leadership. This is true despite the fact that DC residents do not have voting representation in Congress. Currently, DC has limited Home Rule. The city’s laws and budget are subject to approval by Congress. The President of the United States controls key aspects of DC’s justice and public safety system.

Within the past several years, Congress more directly and frequently challenged DC’s rights to self-governance. We expect these challenges to increase and intensify over the next several years.

Pro bono support from talented attorneys can help us protect DC’s right to self-governance and ensure DC laws reflect the values of it voters and residents.

THE EVENT:

At this lunch-and-learn, we will discuss:

  • The basics of the Home Rule Act, other relevant laws, and anticipated threats to DC's limited right to self-governance.
  • Specific opportunities for attorneys to get involved in ensuring District residents retain a voice in local government.
  • The support DC Appleseed provides to ensure you can competently and confidently serve the District and its residents during this turbulent time.
